ASICS for mining and AI chips are completely different optimizing for different functions and using different fabs. No chance the two compete with each other.
Don’t those chips go obsolete every 12-24 months? I’m more thinking of the server farm infrastructure and cheap power.
Also not entirely sure you’re right about that since I’ve heard the complete opposite from fairly educated people… although I’ll freely admit that none of them are AI industry natives or anything.
AI chips are at least a generation ahead of ASIC mining chips. That is why China can make cheap ASIC mining chips but can’t make chips comparable to NVIDIA AI chips. Also an ASIC mining chip is optimised for maximum performance per power used at the lowest cost per chip as that is how you make money mining. AI chips are optimised for performance and power used and chip cost is not nearly as important as the profit comes from the accuracy of the resulting model and not from chip performance.
The infrastructure itself like the data center is not a limiting factor. Both industries are more profitable per electricity and other infrastructure used than many other industries using these resources.
