The Donald J. Trump — Live Tweeting/Truths & Discussion Thread (Part 2)

The whole World is on fire under these clowns!

I assumed this was nonsense or at least greatly exaggerated, but seems basically true:

Vance has frequentlypointed to Springfield as a cautionary tale of unchecked immigration: the town of around 60,000 has received some 15,000-20,000 migrants in the last four years, many of them from Haiti.

Some good background here, but this is from last month before the recent hysteria over roving gangs of hungry Haitian petnappers.

One thing that often isn’t clear from reporting: how do they get there?

Like Trump says 20k Haitians were “dumped” there and NPR says they “received” migrants, but when looking at the individual stories discussed in NPR here or the NYT article I posted on the other thread, it seems like individuals making decisions for themselves and not some orchestrated government scheme to resettle Haitians there:

If it’s true that this is a case of more motivated workers making economic decisions for themselves based on the labor market, then, two things:

  • an obvious one, but focusing on the fact that the workers are Haitian is pure racism; no one is writing such worried articles about the mass migration of white Americans to North Dakota oil fields
  • the media really needs to change how it reports on this? Like they’re straightforwardly writing articles that make it sound like a bunch of people wound up in Springfield against their will, when the reality is that there is capacity for people to freely come for jobs and they just didn’t want black foreigners to move in.

Manufacturing plant opens. Apparently not enough locals for this jobs. So they recruit a labor pool willing to work ($19/h) and I’m guessing are highly unlikely to unionize.

I’m sensing there is more to the story on that front.

Everything is a complete repeat of all of American history. When French Canadiens were recruited and took massive numbers of jobs in the New England textile mills there was a big backlash. Interestingly at the mill owners were relatively progressive, and they worked to increase schooling for children, churches, and other social supports. I’m guessing the factory owners are just letting the local structures drown.

we’ve seen this exact story in 2016 and in 2020 and so far he hasn’t managed to actually shoot himself in the foot. Everyone seems convinced that THIS time will be different, I’m not really convinced
