The far right is already being riled up by other social media platforms, and their content is not appealing to regular people. Regular people on the other hand do see some content about, for example, Americans moving to Europe and being stunned by how different it is. Maybe I’ll post a variety of examples later.

If the government has evidence that the purpose of TikTok was to divide Americans for geopolitical gain, they should release it. Because the reality imo is the algorithm is just the best one out there, Zuck has even said they’re trying to adapt theirs to be more like it - and that’s totally fine, but TikTok is a bridge too far.
At the end of the day I don’t think it’s a coincidence that there have basically been two social media platforms that really had traction on the left - Twitter and TikTok - and one got bought by a RWNJ billionaire and banning the other is maybe the only thing the GOP and Dems can agree on.
If you’re fucking over the bottom 50% and eventually more and more, you certainly don’t want it to be easy for the normies to be woken up about that.

The issue is clearly China, whether that issue is straight racism or any bona fide geopolitical risk is a completely different question. There is no way politicians are familiar enough with the content on any given platform to get into this sort of tizzy over some kids seeing videos from socialists on TikTok but not any of the other dozen platforms

I think it’s more like the billionaire tech bros don’t like not having control over the most powerful social media platform right now and know this stuff can proliferate on there and they can’t stop it, and that’s bad for them. So they tell their other billionaire friends and they tell the politicians they own that TikTok needs to go.

I’m not saying the platform itself is inherently virtuous, but it’s not inherently bad either. It’s a better social media app with a better algorithm. The two primary differences between TikTok and American social media apps are that TikTok is better and that the owners of TikTok have little/no interest in protecting the American wealthy’s interests.
Banning it is absolutely ridiculous, and the reasons they’re giving to ban it are absolutely ridiculous. It is at best crony capitalism, and at worst intended to stifle free speech.
Regardless of the specifics, if it gets banned during a dem presidency that will for sure have a negative effect on millenial and gen z or x or whatever turnout. Tiktok is massively popular and massively addictive. There will be a lot of pissed of young potential voters, and Im sure the good faith Republicans will be very quick to target them with ads blaming Biden for banning tiktok.
