I think it’s more common to see stories like this about isolated, podunk school districts but this is for the entire county Pensacola is in, population 300k.

Just letting kids drown in the river while the Texas National Guard watches to own the libs. If I were president we’d possibly have had a shootout between the National Guard and Border Patrol over this.
When kids are drowning you don’t get their ID and check their citizenship or see which side of the river they’re swimming towards. You jump in and help. Everyone with basic human decency knows this, not only in their mind but deep down in their chest, in their heart, in their gut.
This isn’t just hateful and racist, it’s cowardly, it’s inhumane and it’s downright pathetic. And that goes for everyone from Abbott down to the lowest ranking member of the Guard who followed orders instead of saying, “You know what? I’m gonna go save those people, and we’ll sort out which side they end up on after we pull them out and dry them off and give them a blanket, and if you want to shoot me in the back to stop me, you go right ahead.”

The headline makes it sound like people were actively drowning in view of the soldiers, who not only refused to help but then also refused to allow the federal officers to help, but it’s not quite as horrifying as that scenario.
From the story, it seems like Mexican officials made a distress call to the border patrol, who “identified six migrants in the Rio Grande who were in distress near the park” (details unclear), they tried to call the Texas officials but were “unsuccessful” (details unclear).
They went to the park, where I’m sure the Texas soldiers had standing orders to keep the feds out. According to Texas, once they were alerted to the situation, they ‘“actively searched the river with lights and night vision goggles” but found no migrants in distress or bodies.’ Details and timeline of this search are unclear.
The bodies were later recovered by the Mexican officers so it’s not clear they even made it to the area of the park.
Obviously a tragedy, and there needs to be a thorough investigation and accountability. If abbot’s stunt didn’t cost these specific lives, it will no doubt cost others soon enough. Maybe this incident will cause him to reevaluate but probably not.
But it’s not as bonkers as I initially thought.

Dems should do what Republicans do. Run with the headlines, make it sound every bit as bonkers as we initially thought, and make the GOP do the explaining. “Well actually the people drowning weren’t in plain sight and as you’ll see here in paragraph seven, this was a standing order.”
Then hit them with the “You’re making this sound complicated but it’s not. People were drowning, nobody went to help.”
If they’re explaining, they’re losing.

Apparently right wingers are taking credit for the death of Sports Illustrated, because they put a trans woman on the cover of the swimsuit issue.
Sports illustrated has been dead since it sold in 2018 (and you could argue longer than that). The Arena Group has consistently been laying off people and running any last bits of respect the company had into the ground since. But yeah conservatives exist in an alternate universe so not really surprising that they put forward another thing that makes zero logical sense.
