~half of the Republican base have had their minds fully broken and the rest are happy to play along with the lunacy. The economy is irrelevant, abortion is irrelevant, all that matters is whatever their asshole god tells them to think. We have a mental health crisis in America and no one is talking about it.
It’s even more fundamental. Let’s say you’re a moderate old school fiscal conservative Republican. What’s your coalition if you go pro choice? If you give up that huge single issue voting bloc, you may decrease Dem turnout but you also lose a huge chunk of your base.
The GOP coalition is built on getting people to trade their single issue for a shitty economic deal. Guns, pro life, etc. Sure some of them will stay around for the guns or racism, but they’d lose a lot of them and I don’t see another group they can get to latch on.
So that’s going to force some party realignment on issues at some point.
Yeah there are nowhere near enough of those people and good luck finding a candidate those people will turnout for who also can get anyone not like that to go for them.
Boy, I wish I had your optimism, but from where I”m sitting it looks like history is going to exactly repeat itself from 2015 when @riverman predicted the end of the Republican Party and instead they captured all three branches of government.
With a Zeldin vote and a Scalise vote, there are four GOP votes for candidates other than Jordan, so he’s not going to make it unless they change their votes.
