I gotta be honest George Santos is probably my favorite GOP politician. He’s not much more dishonest than the rest of them and he’s a lot more entertaining/fun. Plus he makes the rest of them look terrible just by association.

Let’s be real him being elected isn’t even his fault. That’s on the people who ran against him in the primary and the general election. He’s a full blown grifter who even a mild level of opposition research would have totally annihilated.

ADF is providing free legal representation to Idaho in anti-abortion,...

The state of Idaho is outsourcing its legal work to conservative policy organizations, which is kinda just making explicit the sort of marriage that had previously been more subtle:

Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador, a Republican, has brought on the far-right Christian legal advocacy organization Alliance Defending Freedom to represent the state in at least three cases in recent months, documents obtained by Law Dork show. In each case, ADF has agreed to represent the state “without charge” — a move that experts say raises several ethical concerns.

“Are they representing the state of Idaho or not?” James Tierney, a lecturer at Harvard Law School who was the former attorney general of Maine and teaches courses on the role of state attorneys general, told Law Dork. “They have their own principles,” the former Democratic AG said of legal advocacy groups — adding that such groups also have their own funding sources, which are unknown to the state’s residents.

Iowa rejects millions in federal summer food aid for children

Summer EBT, started during the COVID-19 pandemic and slated to become permanent in 2024, provides low-income children with $40 per month in benefits during the three months of the summer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture covers the cost of the benefits, but states must pay for half of administrative costs.

States have until Jan. 1 to notify the USDA if they want to provide Summer EBT next summer. Iowa announced its decision to bypass federal funding Friday.

“Federal COVID-era cash benefit programs are not sustainable and don’t provide long-term solutions for the issues impacting children and families,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a statement. “An EBT card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic.”

Instead, Iowa will continue to support Iowa children eligible for food assistance year-round by enhancing and expanding already existing childhood nutrition programs, she said.

Reynolds would rather “promote nutrition” by…starving children? It says the calculus here for Iowa is that they’re declining $20M in federal money because they say they’d have to spend $2M themselves, but others are skeptical:

Trone Garriott said she did not know how Health and Human Services determined the state’s share of administrative costs for the Summer EBT program would be $2.2 million.

“It costs our state $2.2 million in shared administrative costs to run the entire SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) for the whole state,” she said.

This isn’t the first time the Reynolds administration has snubbed federal funding from the Democratic administration.

In April, Iowa announced it would not seek $3 million in federal climate planning money. Instead, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency authorized agencies in the Corridor and around Central Iowa to seek the money. Reynolds also rejected $95 million for COVID-19 testing in schools in 2021 that was part of the American Rescue Plan Act.

I do think 6-12 months ago it would have been possible to win the nomination taking Trump on directly. The path was “he’s a whining loser with too much baggage.” But now, the only path is him dying or being locked up, so everyone is just trying to be the only alternative left if those things happen.

Of course, no Republican other than Trump can win if he is alive because he will burn it all down, duh.

It really is something else that we’ve sunk so far that in 2023, almost 2024, a Republican presidential candidate cannot risk being seen as against slavery. Like, slavery is popular enough in the GOP base that they can’t just oppose it.
