There is a cartoon that I can’t find, probably Family Guy, where its pointed out that Luke maybe was a sicko because he was out there shooting womp rats all the time.
Splitting hairs here, but it does seem like the intention was for him to take the lead, IIRC before Red Leader heads into the trench with his wingmen, he tells Luke to “take Red 2 and 3 out of range and wait for my signal to start your run” or whatever.
Either way it seems like Luke wants to step up and take charge regardless, once RL misses the shot and then goes down, he pretty confidently announces “Biggs, Wedge, close it up. We’re going in, we’re going in full throttle…” I get the sense that Biggs at least knows from back home that he’s the better shot and would defer to him.
It could have been written where Luke was just there for cover to start the run and then unexpectedly had to take over once Wedge bailed and Biggs ate it, but I think it would take away from the gravitas of that scene.
