I will log relevant info & changes to site users here.
I’m going to try upgrading the site, not because there’s a particular need (it’s from 2.9.0 beta14 to 3.0.0 beta15, which despite the appearance of a large change due to 2.9 → 3.0, is really just one new beta release), but because it’s better to practice this kind of thing earlier rather than later and make sure it all works. I have no idea how much (if any) downtime this involves; let’s all find out together when I press the button(s)!
Hi everyone, we just had about ten minutes of downtime because I am dumb. I rebuilt the site for a backend configuration change, and I assumed based on how smoothly this went the other night:
that this wouldn’t necessarily involve site downtime (the site appeared to still be up during the early part of that upgrade process at least). But, clearly, it does.
Going forward I will only do these kinds of updates late at night unless urgently necessary, very sorry for the inconvenience!
If you want your forum home page to show threads with alternating colors, or for posts in threads to have alternating colors, you can now join groups that will enable that behavior regardless of what theme you use. See here for more info and screenshots about the thread list, and here for more on alternating post colors.
Brand new feature: statuses! You can kinda think of this like the “Location:” field in your profile from 2+2. In your profile, you can select an emoji that will display next to your name on all your posts, as well as an optional message that will appear when hovering over it:
You can set your status at the bottom of the main “preferences” page. Make sure you click “save changes” after setting one or it won’t be saved.
Brand new feature: reactions! If another emoji ( ) captures your reaction to a post better than a heart, you can mouse over the “like” button and select a different emoji:
Posts with reactions will show all reactions underneath:
