The cash story (as I understand it, she claims she paid the guy for her half of these trips…but in cash, so oops she can’t prove it) is pretty sketch. Like you’re paying someone hundreds or even thousands of dollars and you don’t Venmo them? Zelle? Paypal? Write a check? You give them a stack of hundreds and that’s a regular habit for you??

Black Twitter credibly asserts it’s a cultural thing. Have also seen several TV commentators back this up.

My depression era neighbor (since passed) had enough cash stashed in his house that

1 after he passed his wife had a relative with a carry permit come to the house to take her to deposit over $20k

2 after she passed the family found another $5k

3 the liquidation company found another thousand plus in the attic rafters. In an envelope labeled “Y2K”

When the banking system let you down historically it’s not hard to see how the “mattress full of cash” term came into being.
