The Donald J. Trump — Live Tweeting/Truths & Discussion Thread (Part 2)

Am I correct that the crime here is violating federal election campaign finance laws by taking money from donors and using it not to put out tv spots or lawn signs but instead to pay someone to not make potentially damaging statements in public? Assuming I’m right, that means its legal to pay someone to say something positive about a campaign, but illegal to pay someone to not talk shit about your campaign?

*Federal Law Enforcement also excluded.

No that’s not the crime. He used his own (trump org) money. The crime is that he falsified business records to make it look like this was a legitimate business expense when in fact it was effectively a campaign contribution (which is itself unreported and therefore a crime).

It’s amazing, he could have just not paid her and let her talk to the press, he still would have won.

Ahh ok, so the problem is that paying someone to help your chances to win the election (perhaps either as a consultant to do work for you, or perhaps paying someone off to hide your misdeeds) is a campaign expense and it wasn’t recorded as such with the FEC or whatever. DING GOT’EM!
