2024 LC Thread #1 - Elder Fraud Advice

During a couple episodes Tony specifically calls out football season as his busy season.

Not to mention the entire season dedicated to the bust out, that Tony calls their bread and butter.

Too lazy to google but wonder if there quasi reliable data as what percent of the median household income was spent on gambling over the last 100 years or something

definitely convinced by the people who have become experts in socioeconomic effects of gambling by watching a tv show

Yeah I definitely didn’t do that I also referred to the pretty major role in syndicate operations gambling played. You’re talking about the primary racket for guys like Luciano, Lansky/Siegel and the guy who gave those three guys their big break Rothstein. These same people were major players in Atlantic City casino junkets as well as illegal gambling operations in NYC.

Gambling was so big for organized crime that it wasn’t even considered to be one racket. They definitely saw casinos, numbers, and sports betting as separate businesses each producing enough revenue to fuel entire organizations. Wars were fought with dozens of murders over each and every one of these things.

The reality is that gambling is a very significant industry in terms of $$$ spent and always has been. When it’s illegal the people who service that demand are criminals who are then extremely vulnerable to themselves being extorted by other criminals. The people they pay to operate are the organized criminals with the muscle and political/police connections to keep the business operating safely. And then there’s the shylocking that flows from it which is absolutely critical in terms of top line revenue and opportunities to do other lucrative scams like bust outs which are very very much a real thing.

The Sopranos for better or worse was a fairly realistic show on the subject of organized crime. Obviously there were some moments that absolutely don’t pass the smell test (a captain in the NJ mob in the late 90’s isn’t opportunistically hitting a debtor with his car, he’s under damn near 24/7 surveillance and has been for over a decade by this point… and that happens in the pilot.) but the business stuff was close enough to how it works in real life.

I have no idea where you got this idea that gambling isn’t a big business for organized crime or some kind of side hustle but it’s just factually entirely incorrect. Not even close to being correct either. Gambling was potentially the largest and most reliable single source of income for the mob for 70+ years (they didn’t keep records we can check) with only drugs and construction/union related extortion even having a chance of being bigger. In terms of risk vs reward it was almost certainly the best business the mob ever had.

Nancy Mace is a complete idiot, in addition to being a pathological liar and abusive boss. Oh yeah she also vandalized her own house.

So she’s a better than median GOP politician is what you’re saying.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a large number of current bridges were not designed with the growth in container ship size and so whatever safety measures where added to the bridge are probably no longer so safe…

I also wouldn’t be surprised if a vast majority of the public has zero frame of reference for how big these ships are. If you don’t live near a port, or have not seen one of these in person, it’s hard to truly picture the scale. The port in Philly has had a few monstrous ships unloading over the past month. One I counted the above deck containers at 20 across, 7 high, and about 20 lengthwise. That’s 2,800 semi trucks just above deck.

Yeah there is absolutely no chance anyone was building a bridge that was rated to take a collision with a ship that size. The safety question that needs to be answered here is how do we build panamax container ships that don’t crash into bridges not how do we make bridges ship resistant. One of those things is way easier and cheaper than the other ainec.

This is a good point.

I don’t even think it’s possible to suspend something over water that you could ram a panamax into and not just blow it up. At a certain point the physics are just fucked and this is so far past that it’s kind of hilarious.

Bridge that can handle a collision with a panamax is a very boring name for a sci fi megastructure you could see with the naked eye from space probably.

My MIL is hospitalized with a perforated bowel?? She lost 50 lbs in 6 months but didn’t bother going to the doctor until now? 30% mortality rate?

If mechanical engineers make missiles and chemical engineers make bombs
