Definitive All-Time Disney Original Song Bracket Battle: It's the Circle of Life

That concludes the 2nd round. We are down to our Thrilling 32.

Movies that now have no more songs in contention:

101 Dalmations
Brave
Coco
Dumbo
Hercules
Lady and the Tramp
Mary Poppins
Monsters Inc.
Pocahontas
Sleeping Beauty
Tarzan
The Aristocats
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Muppets
Toy Story 2
Toy Story 3
Zootopia

Movies with the most songs remaining:
Beauty and the Beast (4)
The Little Mermaid (4)

Movie with the most attrition:
Mary Poppins (4)

Movies without a loss and more than one win:
Beauty and the Beast (4)
The Little Mermaid (4)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (2)
The Jungle Book (2)

Second round record of songs from movies prior to 1987: 7/17

Second round record of Pixar movies: 1/4

Second round record of Oscar winners: 7/14 :astonished:

Unseeded songs still remaining:
What’s This? - The Nightmare Before Christmas
Whistle Stop – Robin Hood
Be Our Guest - Beauty and the Beast (technically; it should have been seeded)

Minor edit: in my notes that are separate from the official bracket, I’d flagged both Chim-Chim Cheree and Almost There as winning. Almost There was the actual winner, so Mary Poppins is eliminated, and the records of both old songs and Oscar winners falls.

  1. One of the most deserving Oscar winners against a song that is fantastic but held back by the fact that it only got 2 nominations.
  2. It’s nothing but bangers against bangers from here on out.

So many of these match ups a brutal, especially the two 2 vs. 7 mathchups, but I may be so bold as to call Beauty and the Beast vs. Part of Your World the marquee matchup this round.

Jesus fuck this is a hell of a matchup.

Powerhouse matchup here. Winner should take down down this section of the bracket.

  • Nice try, Ali. But it’s just not good enough to take out Let It Go.
  • Gaston is…losing? What the fuck? No hate intended for I Wanna Be Like You, but Gaston is the GOAT villain song and should be crushing.
  • Can You Feel the Love Tonight is being harmed by the fact that people are much more familiar with the Elton John version. This one is still elite, though Snowman is very good and I won’t complain if it wins.
  • Toy Story song is great, but it’s had an absurdly easy road so far as a 14 seed. Voting for it again. Moana song is meh.
  • Little Mermaid derby is a blowout.
  • I Just Can’t Wait To Be King might be the second best Lion King song (still tilted by Hakuna Matata going out early)
  • Beauty and the Beast in what is easily the toughest matchup of the round.
  • Picking Zip, though (unlike last round) it won’t be a crime against humanity for Friend Like Me to win here.

I’ll do my full write up later, but I think CYFTLT is hurt perhaps less by not being Elton John as it is hurt by the awkward lion implied-sex-but-not-sex that’s kinda trying to be human-like but that falls well into the uncanny valley. Like, yeah, we’re not supposed to judge the animations here, but I still can’t shake that awkwardness.

I have my 6 yo daughter helping me with votes now. I had to overrule her to pick You’ve got a Friend in Me, and Friend like Me. But let her pick close ones, Let it Go, Beauty and the Beast, and Do you want to build a snowman.

It’s entirely fair to register an account on her behalf and cast both your votes. I think it’s for the best that children participate, as I think the best Disney song of all time should appeal to the young, the middle aged, and the old, and to people of any and all genders.

I’m gonna be so tilted if a forum of adult (mostly men) allows Let It Go to beat I Wanna Be Like You next round.
