Elon Musk: Making Crap Cars since 2003

Billionaire adjacent-

Where’s an iceberg when you need one?

Billionaires like him are getting fleeced when they spend half a billion on a sailboat, right? Like what could possibly cost so much money? I bought a used 14 foot sloop decades ago for a grand.

**Edited for incorrect boat size. 14 feet, not 18.

boats depreciate like yogurt, there aren’t a lot of 417-foot sailboats around to scoop up on the 2ndary market.

I really don’t get the appeal. Is it even that nice to have a yacht? I get that their yachts are big for a boat but I would still feel confined if I spent weeks on one relative to being on land somewhere.

And how often is Bezos actually going to use that thing? Wouldn’t it make just as much sense to rent a yacht when you need one?

I recommend the article the Duker posted. There isn’t really an earthbound example of conspicuous consumption comparable to a megayacht. It’s not about having the boat. It’s about having a bigger boat than anyone else.

Where’s an operational U-boat when you need one?

Most comparable thing are sports teams. There is only one Dallas Cowboys, or team that wins the super bowl

Those don’t overlap in a venn diagram. At least not for almost 30 years.

you never hear of female billionaires with gigantic yachts or penises.

Sports teams are generally insanely profitable though, at least in the USA.

When you feel confined on your mega yacht, you just get on your G5 and go to your chalet in Switzerland! In addition to the points mentioned above, I think it’s about keeping yourself in constant motion so you are never forced to reflect on your life actions.

I think outside the NFL they arent profitable day to day but if you bought an NHL/NBA/MLB team more than a decade ago its worth at least double, if not 10x+ in some instances.

(Obviously the lakers are different from OKC etc)

what

if you’re that rich you’re not spending “weeks” on the boat, you spend a day or two in st moritz and then your crew drives the boat to your next weekend party while you take the chopper back to your G650.

I think all of those leagues are profitable day-to-day, but I know the NBA is.

The less time you use it the dumber it is to own it. I read that New Yorker article and it’s even more baffling to me. Like the guys who are rich enough to be in the Monaco yacht club but not rich enough to have the biggest boat? Why do they go if they’re going to be subtly dissed and put in their place in the hierarchy?

I really think if I was a billionaire I wouldn’t be so dependent on the social approval of other billionaires or have any desire to partake in that kind of thing. I’d rather hang out with my own sycophants and hangers on

Thread of speculation about the recent 2FA changes, I’ll post the main points:

He also thinks the “only SMS 2FA for Blue subscribers” change won’t help, because the fraudsters who are now crushing Elon will just use stolen credit cards & chargebacks against him and keep doing it.

They are almost all huge narcissists. I don’t find their petty desire to be “respected” that weird.
