Putting this SVB tweet here because Jason (Calacanis) is a prime Elon simp responsible for this amazing exchange, trying to get money together last April for Muskā€™s Twitter takeover:

Musk: Whatā€™s going on with you marketing an SPV to randos? This is not ok.

Calacanis: Not randos, I have the largest angel syndicate and thatā€™s how I invest. Weā€™ve done 250+ deals like this and we know all the folks. I thought that was how folks were doing it.

Calacanis: $100m+ on commitments, but if thatā€™s not ok itā€™s fine. Just wanted to support the effort.

Calacanis: ~300 [qualified purchasers] and 200 accredited investors said they would do it. Itā€™s not an open process obviously, only folks already in our syndicate.

Calacanis: There is massive demand to support your effort btw ā€¦ people really want to see you win.

Musk: Morgan Stanley and Jared [Birchall, the head of Muskā€™s family office] think you are using our friendship not in a good way

Musk: This makes it seem like Iā€™m desperate

Musk: Please stop

ā€¦

Calacanis: Just trying to support you ā€¦ obviously. I reached out to Jared and sort it out.

Musk: [hits ā€œlikeā€ tapback]

ā€¦

Calacanis: And you know Iā€™m ride or die brother ā€” Iā€™d jump on a grande for you.

Musk: [hits ā€œloveā€ tapback]

Anyway:

Thatā€™s not even the worst of the how it started how itā€™s going from that clown. Lots of stuff where he rails against government assistance, right up until he needs some.

Lol does this mean that all Tesla keys work for all other Teslaā€™s of the same make and model? Thatā€™s fucking ridiculous

key fob rfid spoofing is extremely easy and common now. some car makers have gotten really lax on security with this stuff for reasons I donā€™t understand. Iā€™m not a big fan of keyless ignition for this reason. Iā€™m not sure the reasoning behind it, but maybe they figure since cars are super easy to track if stolen that that would be a deterrent. I donā€™t think this is uniquely a tesla problem, but I could be wrong obv

They werenā€™t using keys. Your phone is your key for a Tesla. (There are backup cards but they would not have used them.)

itā€™s probably like the old garage door openers, there are six random bits assigned at the factory and they basically just assume that the chances your neighbor will have the same code are pretty small.

Yeah, I get that spoofing is easy, but this doesnā€™t even seem to be a case of spoofing. Like, are there only a handful of codes theyā€™re using or something?

Well that makes it even more confusing then. Can any iPhone start any Tesla because they fucked up?

So this begs another question: If your phone battery dies while you are out somewhere, you are shit out of luck and can no longer start your car? This seems like the most asinine fucking system Iā€™ve ever heard of. Like, my Toyota has an app that allows my phone to start the car, but I also have a key fob, because, you know, I donā€™t want to have to rely on my fucking phone working for my car to be working.

They have a card the size of a credit card for backup, but it has to be almost touching to work. I carry mine in my wallet.

Software bugs are never every user can start every car. That wouldnā€™t make it to production in even the worst org. Software bugs you experience are corner cases. Very unusual circumstances. Not the normal happy path. For Tesla the ā€œone in a millionā€ case happens multiple times a day.

I own a Tesla and their software is trash, below standard, very not good. But they arenā€™t letting every user drive every car.

Tesla also sells a cute fob shaped like your car at least for the Model X. Tapping the trunk or frunk on the fob will also open them.

Randomly assigned is a step above the garage doors in my childhood neighborhood. It was new construction in the 80ā€™s and the builders must have used doors that came with the same default codes. I remember driving down the street with my dad opening nearly every door for fun. They were probably from an early Musk company.

Also use PIN to drive and then even if someone somehow gains access to your car and is able to ā€œstartā€ it, theyā€™d need to enter your PIN to drive it.

get your popped corn kernels.
