Saw a video recently of an 11 year old in court who got busted bringing guns to school. The judge asked him if he could afford an attorney.

It looked absolutely absurd with a little kid there, and it’s beyond absurd to envision a 6 year old. Obviously adults need to be help responsible, but lol guns.

School searched 1st-grader's backpack before teacher shot

Administrators at the Virginia school where a first-grader shot his teacher last week learned the child may have had a weapon in his possession before the shooting but did not find the 9mm handgun he brought despite searching his bag, the school system’s superintendent said.

Michelle Price, a spokesperson for the Newport News school district, said Superintendent George Parker said during an online meeting with parents Thursday night that at least one school administrator was notified the boy may have a weapon before the 6-year-old shot the teacher at Richneck Elementary in Newport News.

“The student’s bookbag was searched at that point, after it was reported that he may have a weapon. Nothing was found in the backpack,” Price said Friday.

Six year olds, and their backpacks, are not large, how do you look for a gun and not find it???

Six dead in California home shooting, including 6-month-old baby and her mother

In the Central Valley, small town outside Visalia:

“We also believe that this is not a random act of violence. We believe that this was a targeted family. We believe that there are gang associations involved in this scene, as well as potential narcotics investigations,” Boudreaux said.

This feels more like a war on drugs problem situation than a gun violence problem.

Doubt it was the cartel. For all their reputation for violence that’s mostly about controlling turf not about preventing people from informing. That’s because the drug cartels have a strictly cellular structure that significantly limits the downside risk from informants, and because all of the cartel higher ups are already bunkered down in countries that aren’t the US hiding from the authorities (OK I mostly mean Sinaloa or similar lol). They simply don’t care if you accuse them of drug trafficking when they’re already on the global most wanted lists for ultra violence.

The deal if you get busted trafficking drugs is that you tell the cartel what you told law enforcement so they can do damage control.

This feels like a local gang thing. Ridiculously wanton violence on this side of the border isn’t the cartel’s style. If this happened in Mexico I would 100% believe it was cartel related but I 100% would not believe that it was because someone was talking to the authorities. Talking to another cartel abso-fucking-lutely would be cause for this kind of thing though.

On the subject of that cellular structure it’s so extreme that it’s surprisingly common for a crew of hitmen to have no idea who they are killing for or why. On many occasions these violence cells have switched sides without even knowing it because their main point of contact changed sides.

And before anyone says ‘sounds like a terrorist organization’ sure kind of, but at this point the drug cartels are the ones innovating the terrorists are the ones copying off of them. The whole murder someone in a ridiculously graphic way, videotape it, and upload it to the internet thing was first come up with by the cartels not ISIS.

Screenshots of a conversation held online between school employees and Parker shortly after the shooting show educators claiming that Zwerner raised alarms about the 6-year-old and sought assistance during the school year.

“she had asked for help,” one staffer wrote in that chat, referring to Zwerner.

On one occasion, the boy wrote a note telling a teacher he hated her and wanted to light her on fire and watch her die, according to the teacher’s account. Alarmed, the teacher brought the note to the attention of Richneck administrators and was told to drop the matter, according to the account. The date of the incident was not mentioned.

The principal and vice principal of the school did not respond to requests for comment on the teacher’s account.

On a second occasion, the boy threw furniture and other items in class, prompting students to hide beneath their desks, according to the account. Another time, the teacher alleges in her account, the boy barricaded the doors to a classroom, preventing a teacher and students from leaving.

The teacher further alleged in her account that the boy was not receiving the educational services he needed, that it was difficult to get help with him during outbursts and that he was sometimes seen wandering the school unsupervised.

The boy’s family said in a statement Thursday, the first public remarks his relatives have given about the shooting, that the 6-year-old was “under a care plan” that “included his mother or father attending school with him and accompanying him to class every day.” That stopped the week of the shooting, the statement said.

“We will regret our absence on this day for the rest of our lives,” the statement read.

The teacher’s account dovetails with descriptions of the student’s behavior shared by the spouse of a Richneck teacher and a mother whose child is enrolled in a class located across the hallway from Zwerner’s. Both the spouse and the mother, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their families’ privacy, said the student was known campuswide for disruptive and violent behavior, and that school employees struggled to manage him in class.

Also some gems about how Newport News, which has had 3 school shootings in the last two years, is planning to deal with the problem:

Parker, the superintendent, said at a meeting with Richneck students that the district is purchasing 90 metal detectors to install at all Newport News schools and acquiring clear backpacks to hand out to students.

Oh, for sure, that will help a lot.

This is ultimately a story about the externalities from a lack of resources & lack of will to stop this kind of thing from happening all mixing together in a powder keg to create this tragic incident.
