Golf Thread: US Open at Pinehurst - RORY VS. ROIDS

Morikawa is making me not like him with all that delay over whether can mark his ball or not. Just putt your putt.

Anyway I guess I benefit financially if Scheffler or Aberg win and like Homa’s personality the most so I’ve got to root against someone.

His ball striking is literally Nicklaus-esque. The wedge and short game isn’t there yet but he’s so young

I’m old enough to remember when they said that about Tiger. Still feel cheated that he didn’t pull it off. He definitely had it in him. Unfortunately, he couldn’t keep the rest of his life together well enough to make it happen.

His body would have kept him from 10. Now 7 or 8???

Not getting input from a biomechanics specialist (or at least not effective input) cost him. There had to be some one that could have told him his body wouldn’t hold up to that swing form

Of course lots of pitchers now trying to blame anything other than velocity and torque for the huge number of elbow surgeries. Teams don’t care, they just keep churning through players. Society don’t care cause it’s elbows, not CTE.

How many green jackets do we think Scheffler is going to win?

Zeroish? One? Seems hard for these guys to keep it going at the very highest level for long.

I’d be surprised if he sniffed Tiger’s 5. It seems like every so often there’s someone who goes on a run like this and looks unbeatable for months. Maybe even a couple of years. They all seem to come back to Earth at some point.

I’d set the line at 3 total Green Jackets (i.e. one more).

Sounds right to me

Scheffler is as close to Tiger as far as iron play as anyone I’ve seen. His game is tailor-made for this course. And think that he already has two green jackets without being a great putter.

Barring injury, I think he can equal Tiger’s 5.

I guess it’s possible by projecting his current form, BUT we’re also seeing him right now at his peak. No guarantee he can continue this level ball striking for a decade plus. Growing up Scottie was good but one of a bunch of good players in his age cohort. He wasn’t Tiger winning every prestigious amateur title multiple times.

Hard to say he will have sticking power. And his run kind of reminds me of Rory’s early run when he won his 4 majors. It looked like he (Rory) would win 10-12 majors and we all know how that played out.

This isn’t peak though, potentially. His putting has sucked and he’s winning everything

I think he also has the right game for US Opens. He hits fairways and greens, and minimizes mistakes. I do think people are getting carried away projecting his dominance, but only because there are so many talented players and a lot can go wrong (injury, gets satisfied and coasts). But I think he wins at least a few more majors.

We’ve seen this with a few different players. I think Rory needs soft conditions to win majors, and not much wind. He doesn’t control his trajectory well enough, and his short game isn’t good enough.

I think he got crowned a little bit by the conditions in his run of majors, and I too started expecting double digit majors. I think he wins a couple more, but unless he retools his game I’m down on his chances at Augusta unless it’s playing soft.

Ruh roh alert. Louisville police back in the news doesn’t look great for them this time either.

Funny you say that because McIlroy has probably been more consistent at the Masters than the other majors, 7 top ten finishes in the last 11 Masters. He can play a high draw which is the shot shape you’re supposed to have to win as a right hander. Augusta doesn’t give many full wedge shots, especially to long hitters, so it avoids the weakest part of Rory’s ball striking.

I think he has a mental block at Augusta, he wants it too much, kind of like Phil at the US Open.

I’m just imagining Jay Monahan having a meeting with Scottie to discuss disciplining him for getting arrested at a tournament, while Greg Norman is hiding outside the door with a giant grin and a blank check.

But really I have seen this situation personally many times where two cops are giving conflicting orders to someone and both are prepared to escalate to a ridiculous level if their instruction is not followed immediately. Good thing this was Scottie and not someone like Sahith where it would have ended with hundreds of gunshots or something.

The PGA, which is hosting this event, and the PGA Tour, are separate entities, so Jay & Co. have nothing to do with this one. But yeah, the thought crossed my mind as well that Scottie could just say FU to all this and cash a billion-dollar check from the Saudis.

Majors are official events on the PGA Tour calendar even if they are run by different entities. They accrue FedEx points and money list earnings. I am pretty sure the tour could discipline one of their players for conduct at a major.

I think the “high draw” aspect of Augusta course fits is a bit overrated now, given the changes to the course and given how modern drivers work. Perhaps it’s a coincidence with the weather (as opposed to climate change driven) but wind seems to be a big factor there the last few years, and I’m not just talking about 12.

Like back when you needed to draw a driver on 13 to get into prime position, draws with the driver were key. Now you can just draw a 3 wood. Same applies to a few other holes. I don’t think height off the tee is key, I think that’s on approach - but if it’s windy, traj control is more important.

They don’t appear to be sweating this at all since none of them actually read news articles or attempt to figure out what happened (or even care), and are therefore convinced that he bRokE tHe Law and AsSauLTeD aN OfFiCeR. Srs bznz. Not even a hint of doubt that the cop attaching himself to a moving vehicle that presents no threat to public safety and no chance of escape might be the unhinged lunatic here.
