yeah 1500/mo buys a lot of ubers. When I did residency in NY, two of our attendings lived in Manhattan. It was cheaper for them to uber out of manhattan every shift than it was to get and park a car.

Interesting article about school funding in Washington:

A tiny district along the Columbia River is suing the state over, essentially, funding inequities, under the context of the state constitution guaranteeing students an education. A recent Washington Supreme Court case found the state to be in violation of that promise, forcing the legislature to significantly increase state funding to education, and this district is saying that for some districts it’s not enough.

In particular:

The School Construction Assistance Program (SCAP) is the largest source of state funding for construction costs. The Legislature allocates funding based on the projected need from year to year, around half a billion for the 2021-2023 biennium. But there are also major barriers to the program — one of them being that districts have to run a successful bond first. When bond failures are high, like they have been recently, as much as half of the program’s funding isn’t ever claimed by districts.

Wahkiakum’s 2020 bond would have raised $28.7 million to renovate and expand Wahkiakum High and the K-8 building. The cost would have been $3.37 per $1,000 of assessed property value, or $1,348 annually for a $400,000 home. In 2022, the Renton School District proposed and passed a tax rate 10 cents lower and raised $676 million.

The state won’t hand out money unless local governments pass a bond measure, and in some areas that’s hard to do on top of there not being much of a property tax base to extract money from anyway.

Meanwhile, in Ohio:

People have tried to domesticate zebras for thousands of years and it’s never worked because they are just assholes.

Apparently Ohio regulates zebras as horses rather than exotic animals.

Ohio has super relaxed exotic animal laws, it was only fairly recently it became illegal to own a tiger. Sure, why not let some idiot own a zebra, what’s the worst that can happen.

So we going to see “Ohio man” start gaining on “Florida man”?
