The Hot Take Thread

The funny thing about Dilbert is that it because exactly the kind of bland corporate workplace fixture that the strip made fun of. It was just inevitable that someone would post a Dilbert cartoon by the coffeemaker in ~85% of American offices.

Just watched Top Gun Maverick. It sucked.

Sir, this is the hot takes thead.

Is this not a hot take?

People everywhere (including a lot of people on UP) were blowing their loads about this.

It’s got a 96 on RT and a 78 on Metacritic to go along with its BP nomination.

A guy next to me on a flight actually did this, watched the movie and fast-forwarded through all the scenes on the ground

based.

Agreed. And this is a hot take. Everyone I know loved the film.

I wasn’t able to suspend my disbelief enough to get into it. 90 year old pilot getting recruited to fly a suicide-ish mission? sure.

And that wasn’t even my biggest problem with it.

Every single character in that film (with the possible exception of Val Kilmer) is at best unlikable and at worst a total fucking douchebag. Why am I supposed to root for any of these people to succeed?

It’s rah rah America boomer porn. I get why a lot of people like it; I just don’t understand why a lot of critics and liberals like it.

I didnt even like top gun 1, hate tom cruise, read the plot of this new one and said pass. Don’t expect I’d enjoy it at all.

Top Gun is just Days of Thunder but with planes. Yes I know Top Gun came out first, I stand by what I said.

No, it definitely sucked.

Michael Clayton is the best law movie and mental illness movie, both by far.

Here’s my lukewarm take: simply disliking popular things is (dare I say) always a cold, stale take. Everyone knows that not everyone likes everything, so disliking something popular isn’t special. It just makes you part of the inevitable minority. If you have a novel or at least interesting reason for disliking the popular thing, then maybe that’s a hot take.

You’re quite clearly set up to be rooting for everyone to get humbled. Mostly, by Maverick, but he also gets his right out of the gate (not that he would have been anything other than a fine red mist when ejecting at impossibly high speeds), and you know that even Maverick’s plan isn’t going to go to plan.

Now that’s a spicy take.
