The Non-political ANGER THREAD

For jogging, smaller size alone makes a dedicated audio device worth it.

So it looks like these all have an outside the door component that would make it obvious we had one - are you aware of any that only go inside and actually record through the peephole?

Did you get a chance to take a look? I think weā€™re going to pull the trigger on something today.

no not yet, I just got back from taking my kids to college and itā€™s just been at the bottom of my pile but this is the site:

Thanks! Iā€™ll check them out and compare to the others.

Hmm I donā€™t have any personal experience with peephole cameras so Iā€™m not sure what solutions are available. Glance through this reddit thread if you havent yet, may have some useful info.

One person replied ā€œjust google pinhole wifi battery and you will get tons of results for under $100 that you can essentially attach with velcro to the inside of the door with the camera lined up to the peephole and have a USB battery pack that can run it for a few days at a time.ā€

Thats the first thing I would try. Should be able to get a camera mounted just right on the inside without having to remove the actual peephole hardware. Something like this just attached to the door:

Just get a battery powered doorbell camera and see what happens

Thanks coasterbrad, thatā€™s going to be a helpful thread I think. Weā€™re suspicious that someone has possibly been trying to get in our door the last few days (a bunch of failed entry attempts on the smart lock), and weā€™re aware of another tenant snooping around someone elseā€™s window. So putting the camera outside is a good deterrent but we want to take a shot at catching someone in the act or confirming that it isnā€™t happening.

We canā€™t go to the complex because we are aware of others having stuff stolen and the complex doing nothing, if not helping cover it up. We also heard a story of a security guard sort of trying to steal a $500 item from a tenant - and heā€™s still working here.

Shitty situation.

Seems like this would be a good time to start building a paper trail detailing your concerns? A letter to management listing all the problematic events/issues might be a good first step? If you donā€™t feel like rocking the boat yet, start a detailed log by date of everything that seems dodgy.

Yeah already did this - for these issues and maintenance. I think going to management is more likely to hurt than help, unfortunately.

Speak for yourself. I now have to buy bags for my small trash cans and cat litter instead of just using old grocery bags

Really surprised by the number of people who buy alarm monitoring service, there must be something I donā€™t get about it. I understand the desire for a camera in case of theft, but I donā€™t see how monitoring would ever add value for me. If someone breaks in I have a cellphone and can call 911, that is such an improbable occurrence anyway. Any other use cases I can see when my camera sees something and decide if there is something to be worried about or not. I feel like an external alarm monitor is going to result in false calls to emergency services a lot more often than it would do anything useful.

Sure, but the ratio of false calls to life saving calls can be extremely high and still be of value. I donā€™t want to rely on getting a push notification to my phone, catching it immediately, looking, and calling 9-1-1 in time. I donā€™t know what my average notification ā†’ notice it ā†’ call time is, but itā€™s gotta be a few minutes longer than what would happen with the professional monitoring, and that could make the difference.

Oh you donā€™t have to do that, all cat litter is flushable actually.

Thatā€™s highly dependent on your piping.

Well with police in this country a false call could be a life ending call. What if police get called regarding a home invasion and some shithead racist sees your wife through a window and thinks sheā€™s a baddie? I think a police mistake is more likely to get someone I love killed than a violent criminal.

Iā€™m a light enough sleeper Iā€™d be able to hear anyone breaking in and be able to wake up and call 911. Plus I live in a pretty safe suburb but even when I lived in urban centers I wasnā€™t considering alarm monitoring services. If thereā€™s a crime the regular camera is good enough to get a video of who did it. I think most burglars wouldnā€™t even try going inside or upstairs if there were obviously people in the house anyway. If someone breaks in when weā€™re not home I get the video from my camera and claim with insurance if something really valuable is stolen. Renters insurance probably costs less per month than the monitoring service and homeowners is a must if you have a mortgage anyway.

I donā€™t have illegal stuff to my knowledge but I really donā€™t want the police going through my house when Iā€™m not there anyway. A couple decades ago a buddy of mine was on vacation, his apartment was broken into, his dad was in town and saw it had been broken into and called the police. They went in to investigate and found his bong and he got cited for it, while they made zero attempt to find the thieves.

The monitoring service calls you and 911, so if either of us is home we can immediately cancel the call if everything is ok. We have renters insurance but that wouldnā€™t cover everything, and given the possibility of being followed home from a casino and robbed at gunpoint, being able to get police out without making the call is important.

Experience #2 with DoorDash having the most hostile customer support on the planet. I put an order in tonight for some guests we had over, and for some reason it billed me for delivery and the full service charge (like $20 total) which should mostly get erased by the DashPass subscription I have as a credit card benefit through Chase. So I get in touch with customer service thinking this should be an easy fix, like give me $20 in credits for my next order or whatever, but instead theyā€™re just likeā€¦lying to me? The guy told me ā€œyou donā€™t have DashPassā€. I shared a screenshot from my account page showing an active subscription and heā€™s like ā€œsorry, I already told you the problemā€ and ended the chat.

This company suuuuuuucks lol
